The Writer's Corner

Barbara Dawson Smith

Do you often drift away in flights of fancy?  Have you ever found yourself dreaming up characters and plots?  Have you taken pen to paper or put fingers to the keyboard and started to write your own romance novel?

How wonderful that you've undertaken the tremendous but satisfying task of writing a novel!  I recommend joining Romance Writers of America, a professional, non-profit organization of both published and unpublished writers founded in 1980 to promote excellence in the romance genre.  Since then, RWA has grown to over 9000 members worldwide.  There are local chapters where you can meet other aspiring writers and hear speakers on every aspect of writing a romance novel.  Also, you can enter your partial manuscript in the annual Golden Heart Award contest for aspiring writers.  Editors often judge the finals, looking for new authors to buy (this happened to me back in 1984!)

As part of your annual RWA dues, you'll receive a monthly magazine, which contains many useful articles on writing and also the latest information on editors and publishers.  For information on joining RWA, call the Houston office at 832-717-5200 (ext. 21) or visit their website http://www.rwanational.com

Listed below are some of my articles on writing.  RWA chapter members, please feel free to reprint any of these in your local newsletter, so long as it's attributed to me.
